Taiga Landscape Degradation Evidenced by Indigenous Observations and Remote Sensing

چکیده
Siberian taiga is subject to intensive logging and natural resource exploitation, which promote the proliferation of informal roads: trails unsurfaced service roads neither recognized nor maintained by government. While transportation development can improve connectivity between communities urban centers, new also interfere with Indigenous subsistence activities. This study quantifies Land-Cover Land-Use Change (LCLUC) in Irkutsk Oblast, northwest Lake Baikal. Observations from LCLUC are used spatial autocorrelation analysis identify examine major drivers transformations social–ecological–technological systems. Spatial results informed interviews local residents Evenki, history, modern industrial political actors. A comparison relative changes observed within outside Evenki-administered lands (obshchina) was conducted. The illustrate: (1) most persistent related change coniferous peatland (over 4% decadal change); however, during last decade, extractive infrastructure have become driver leading conversion 10% forest into barren land; (2) anthropogenic-driven area obshchina three times higher than the980s 1990s more 1.5 following decades.

متن کاملRemote sensing and conservation of isolated indigenous villages in Amazonia
The vast forests on the border between Brazil and Peru harbour a number of indigenous groups that have limited contact with the outside world. Accurate estimates of population sizes and village areas are essential to begin assessing the immediate conservation needs of such isolated groups. In contrast to overflights and encounters on the ground, remote sensing with satellite imagery offers a sa...
متن کاملAmazonia Biodiversity Estimation Using Remote Sensing and Indigenous Taxonomy
Measuring and monitoring biological diversity is a priority for safeguarding life on Earth. Measuring species richness is the most popular method to assess biodiversity. It is however laborious and expensive. To obviate this problem many studies of biodiversity use higher taxon richness (using genera and families) as a less data demanding surrogate for species richness, or select some taxa as "...
متن کامل4 Researching state and dynamics in landscape using remote sensing
This chapter looks at the usage of remote sensing data for practical research. Remote sensing data can be used for individual applications and research studies as well as routine work, and basic data sets can be provided as vital pieces information for landscape ecological investigations. Experimental work such as tests related to sensor development, signature research and non-operational digit...
متن کاملRemote sensing and the future of landscape ecology
Landscape ecology focuses on the analysis of spatial pattern and its relationship to ecological processes. As a scientifi c discipline, landscape ecology has grown rapidly in recent years, supported by developments in GIS and spatial analysis techniques. Although remote sensing data are widely employed in landscape ecology research, their current and potential roles have not been evaluated crit...
